What are the titles?

Director: the director of the film is the most important person making a film, as they must control the actors to allow then to best show the charters, emotions and stereotypes that the film requires. Also the director has a big part in the casting and editing parts of the film, this helps them to best portray their idea of what the film should look like.

Producer: A film producer or movie producer is someone who selects a screenplay, initiating the process of film making. The title Executive Producer is normally reserved for a producer with a financial interest in the production. The producer oversees the whole process including coordinating, supervising and controlling matters such as fund-raising, hiring key personnel such as the film director, other producers involved on production, line producer, accountant and arranging for distribution.

Casting: a casting director is one of the most important roles in film making. As they have to look at each of the different roles in the film and then send out “breakdowns”, details of the people they want for the film, to different agents. Once they get replies from the agents, they must go though each one and then get them to audition; to finally find the best person who fits the role.

Editing: Film editors are the people who take the raw footage shot on a movie set, and select which shots, angles, performances and more to use, and then cut them together to form a cohesive and interesting story. This will be over looked by the director, as he has the overall vision of what the film should look like.

Costume designer: the main role of the costume designer is to crate suitable costume, cloths that best suit the genre or time period, for the actors to wear. They will consort with the director and lighting director to get the most out each piece of clothing.

this is a trailer for the movie "se7en". this is a great example of what a trailer is for, giving enough of the film to make people want to see the film.

this is the opening to "se7en". this is one of the greatest opening sequence of all time, with it's use of different camera shots and angles to crate a good atmosphere.

understanding the difference between a trailer and a opening sequence

The purpose of an opening sequence:

The main purposes of a movie opening sequence is to draw in the interest of the audience by setting a mood or atmosphere, which allows the audience to relax and forget about the real world for a few hours. Also, the opening is used to give the audience information about what will happen in the film, but not too much to give away the ending to early; making the audience want to find out what is going on in this film.

the conventions of a opening sequence:

  • it tell the audience who the main actors are it the film
  • it may give a setting of where the film is based
  • the opening must be related to some part of the film, or it would be pointless to have one
  • giving small amounts of info about the film
  • it will be manly close-ups and ex-close-ups, limiting what the audience can see
  • will be used as a base for the film to start off

The purpose of a trailer:

The main purpose of a movie trailer is to sell the film to people, making people want to see the film. Also, the trailer is used to show people the best bits from the film, similarly making people want to see the film; because they what to see what happens as a result of act.

The conventions of a trailer:

  • gives info about the film (genre, actors, etc)
  • it will give a brief idea of the plot of the film
  • it is show off the best/funny bits of the film, to make people want to see why this is happening
  • it uses very short, quick shots
  • voice overs

Continuity Editing Techniques

Mach on action - this is where a charter carys out an action and an other charter ractes to what they do. for example, in G.I. JOE at the begining a man picks up a iron mask and the shot changes to a other man; where his facial slow turns to fear of the mask.

Eyeline Mach - this is where a charter looks at something off screne, then the shot cuts to what they were looking at. this is used in District 9, were he is going to cut off his finger; he looks towards his hand on the rock and the shot changes to the hand on the rock.

180 rule - the camra must sat on one side of the changes, the camra can go anywhere within the side chosen. but it can not go any where on the other side, other wise it would look like both chartes where facing the same way. in Dr. Strangelove, there is a scene in the war room where a number of poeple are having a convesation; the camare never moves form the right hand side on the main charter.

Shot-Reverse shot - if a charter is having a conversation the camrae will swich between both charters, to show there reactions to what has been said. for example, in the clip "the landord" the camare swichs between both charters as they are talking about getting the rent.

Master Shot - This were the camare stays, from start to finish, at a angle that all the charters can be seen; this is commonly a long shot. this is used in a clip called "Master Shot" where two charters meet on a road bright, the angel always stays the same; allowing both chartes to be seen thoughout.
