Conventions of an Opening Sequence

Some of the main conversions of a opening sequence are
  • To give a small amount of the story to the audience, but not to much to give away the whole story right away. it needs to make the audience ask questions on what is going on, so they are pulled in to watch the film.
  • Also, the opening needs to have little clues to foreshadowing bigger things later in the film. this will give the audience things to keep in mind while watching the film.
  • titles of the producers, writers, the director, main actors, sound, makeup and costume, special effects, etc. the titles can also be used to give the feeling of the film; like the titles were to move in a ereey way to show that there is unnatural with in the film.

Kiss Me Deadly (1955, Aldrich, US)

the title to this film is very different to other films, as the text is scrolling down the screen backwards. I believe that this is to make people think about what is going on rather then just ignore the title, as they may mean something later.

at the beginning of this clip a establishing shows a girl in the middle of nowhere, this would mean that the film is start blank without any leads to what is going on; until the charters start to speak.

the woman in this clip is only wearing a trench coat, this could mean that is has been trying to get away from somewhere quickly; maybe out of fear as the people she was with took her shoes and cloths away.

the camerae is fixed to the front of the car which gives the effect of movement down the road, rather that using a fake background. this gives the scene a more natural feel, rather than the audience know that it was recorded in a studio.

the titles of film are in big white text that moves down the scene, but the text is inverted; rather an reading top to bottom it is bottom to top. this gives make the audience think about what they are watching on scene and at the same time it give a strange feeling to what may happens later in the film.

at the beginning, some parts of the story are relaid to the audience thought questions the film makes them ask as they are driving down the road. but one part of this story is show at a road block, where the police are looking for someone with the same descriptions of the girl the man picked up.

right from the start, you can tell that the film will be a thriller; as the woman runs into the path of the car. this show distress the woman has, the only type of film that would show such a thing would be a thriller.

the charters are introduced in very diffrent ways, the girl runing down the road, out of beath, with only a coat to cover herself. but the man is introduced by shouting at the girl because his may of damaged his car. this gives a destincked idea of what the charters are like.

I like the shot where the camera is fixed to the back of the car and you can see the car driving down the road. I like this because it makes the whole scene look much better and realistic.

Brick (2005, Johnson, us)

the first image of these pictures is of the title of the film, it is on a simple black background and the text is wight and written in caps. the second image is setting the scene, it seems to be a urban suburb but mixed with the rural surroundings of the area. the third image is showing the types of cloths used in the film, the brales that the girl is a cgnifcate part of the story as we see it later in the scene; this could mean that cloths are used for dramatic effect in this film. the fourth image show a interesting shot in this scene, by using a extreme close-up you can see that there is a arrow on the cigarette; this simble could be a sign for what will happen later in the film. the firth image is of the font of the titles of the film, it is a very simple all caps, wight text; by using simple text it don't give anything away about what will happen in the film. The sixth image shows the story of the film. from this shot you can see that there is a girl laying on floor and a boy in the corner, the story is mostly to be about the girl and how she got to the scene or maybe the boy. the seventh image is showing the grnea of the film. the way that the girls hair is floating in the water and her pale skin give a grim felling, which could mean it is a thriller or something simarl. the eight image shows the introduction of charters. in the image you can only see one charter but two are introduction, just by using the phone. the final image is shows a shot that I liked in the film. I like the way the quick foces in the shot like somone is try to look at something.

6th Sence (1999, Shyamalan, US)

the first picture in this image is the title of the film, this gives a good idea of what the film is going to do; making it simple, with black background and white fading text, gives the thought that there is going be something mysterious with in the film and there is a eery feel about the film. my second picture is a setting shot, giving a idea of where the scene is; from this picture you can see that it is a old house but there are electric lights so it has be improved, to modern standers. the third picture is based on the costumes of the actors, they are wearing are of a modern stile; making it clear that is film is of a modern era. the forth picture is an example of a interesting shot that is found in this opening, this is interesting to me as they are using the reflection in the award to film the to actors; this gives a scene of pride that they both have for each other, or that they both special to each other. the firth picture is showing the font style for the titles, the font type of the title is similar to times new roman but the lines on top and bottom of the letter are not as pointed. also, the text is coloured white and has a black background to it, this do not give away very much about content of the film; but is does give a small view into the type of film it will be. the sixth picture is related to the story of 6th sense, one of the main characters in this scene is shot; this gives us a very simple idea that by the man getting shot, it will effect the rest of the story and how it will play out in the end. the seventh picture is related to the style of film, genres. From the picture I have chosen you can see that one of the charters is screaming, this gives me the idea that it may be a thriller; as there has not been any other signs that it could be a horror, which uses similar jump scars to excite the audience. the eighth picture is the introduction of charters, and in this picture you can see that she is falling off the step; which give the idea that she has be drink, this could be for a celebration of some kind. the final picture is a good camera shot that I like, as the charter reads the words on the page it comes into focus. I like this because it is show in the most important info about a charter, in a clear and simple way.
